Geez, time flies. I had no idea that I hadn't posted about any of my projects for FOUR YEARS. Anyway, I am alive and well, and doing a lot of crafting, sewing, and DIYing now that it's summer vacation :)

I've been trying to use up things in my crafting closet. I have quite a stash. In the past week, I've made two pool noodle wreaths with flowers left over from our wedding (ten years ago!), a couple hockey stick coasters, and this hockey t-shirt quilt (or "Quill" as my son calls them). I used Yellow Bug Quilts' Mondrian Inspired Quilt Pattern. Very awesome!

I've been thrifting hockey shirts here and there for a couple years now, whenever I see them for a buck or two. I finally had enough to make this quilt that I had pinned eons ago.

As you can see, it is not done yet. I did get the front pieced together today. I'll work on the back as soon as I look through my fabric stash and find ones that I want to use.

Maybe, just maybe, I'll get back on here in a few days to show you some of my other crafts and sewing projects. We aren't spending too much time at home right now because our air went out. Of course it would go out the hottest week of the year. It's in the upper 80s and low 90s this week. Yay!

If you hate it as much as I do (because it's way too complicated!), then this blog post is for you!

I'm sure you've seen these all over bloggy world, right? These are totally doable by the average person with CS5, so here we go!

First of all, when you open a new file, you can choose your dimensions. You can make it an 8x10, a 5x7, etc. Next, once you have a white background (AKA the grandparent poster) on your screen, click on the "T" for text in the left sidebar. You can adjust the color, font, and size of your text. That's fairly intuitive, so I won't go into all that. Double click on your white background and begin typing!

For each grandchild's name, you're going to make a new layer. This will enable you to edit each child's name separately, without affecting all the other children's names. Also make a separate layer for each birthdate. Here's how I make all those separate layers. Type the kid's name, then click over on the right side of the screen where it says, "Layer 1." It should change to the kid's name (or whatever text you just typed). Double click on your white box (AKA the poster) and type in the next kid's name. Keep repeating until your done. Next do all the birthdates in the same manner (feel free to change the color if you want). You don't even need to really type all of this information in the exact spots that you want it to be in in the end, because we'll adjust all that later.

To make the text go up and down instead of left to right, make sure the correct name is highlighted in your list of layers (right side of the screen), and then highlight it on your grandparent poster. Click "Window," and then "character" so that a new box pops up. There should be a little drop down menu you can pull down in the upper right hand of the box. The first two options in this drop down menu are important for changing the direction of the text. Click "change text orientation" to make the text go up and down. You want to make sure that "standard vertical roman alignment" in unchecked. I'm still trying to figure out how to get the up and down layers to flip flop and face the other way. I did it once by clicking "image" and then "image rotation" but it doesn't seem to be working for me now, probably because the text is not an image. Another thing you could do is right click the "T" for text in the leftside bar. Four options will come up, and the second option is the one that makes the text go up and down.

Once you have the name going up and down, go ahead and do it to the birthdates you want to go up and down as well.

You can click an image and drag it to a new location by clicking on the layer name, and then clicking on the appropriate text on your poster. Move the mouse around the name until you see the cursor with the little arrow cross. Now you can move it. Once it's in its new location, click the checkmark at the top of the screen.

If you need to stretch out a word or a birthdate so that they are the same length, click on the image layer name on the right side of your screen, and then hit "Ctrl T." You can now drag it to make it longer or shorter. Click the checkmark when you're finished.

I absolutely hate watching all the cold water go down the drain as I'm waiting for the shower water to warm up. The other day it occurred to me that instead of taking all those milk jugs we go through to the recycling center, we could fill them with the cold shower water, save them for spring, and then water our trees and plants with them! (We killed two new maple trees this past year because we didn't water them enough. Next year, we'll do better, I promise!)

My husband was like, "And what are we going to do with 100 milk jugs while we're waiting for spring?" Good point. We have a little overhang where the house meets the patio, and we're storing them under there for now. I think we'll run out of room though, and then I guess we'll just have to keep them on the patio. We haven't filled them to brim so here's to hoping that they won't explode after freezing and thawing!

Update: It's now midwinter, and we have probably fifty gallons of water sitting all over our patio. I bet the neighbors love that. I'll probably get a letter from the HOA telling me that having milk jugs sitting all over my yard is a violation :)

I just ran across this idea today, which goes right along with my milk jug watering can idea :) She takes a lighter, heats up a needle, and pricks holes in the lid of the milk jug. Excellent. I am so doing that this spring!

On your marks, get set, GO! Let the Christmas crafting begin :)

You've seen these embroidered hand prints all over the bloggy world, right?

I decided I wanted to make mine into Christmas ornaments, although I must admit, they turned out a little larger than I thought they would. Who would have thought that a 3 1/2 year old and a 13 month old would have such large hands? I guess I really know how to grow 'em.

The hardest part was tracing my 3 1/2 year old's hand. The second hardest part was finding my embroidery floss in the basement craft closet. I've had this stuff since I was in 5th grade, when I first got into counted cross stitch. I don't really do that anymore since I've taken up sewing, but of course I could never get rid of the floss!

I did go out and buy a water soluble pencil for marking the hand prints onto my fabric, as well as two small hoops. The white fabric and ribbon was an old curtain from my stash. I think they turned out pretty well if I do say so myself. (Did I mention this was my first try at embroidery?)

Yes folks, this must be the most awesome Christmas gift idea I've run across in years. I am so stoked to make these for all the women in the family. I collected family recipes from my great aunt and grandma, my brother's wife's mom, and my husband's grandma, and then scanned them into my computer as a color PDF file. Next I opened them in Picasa without having any luck, and eventually had my husband help me work on them in Adobe CS5. That worked out much better for me than Picasa, but it helps to have someone who knows how to use the program. I don't know how to use CS5 at all, so my husband has to walk me through every step.

When you first open it up and choose "new," you will be asked what dimensions and at what resolution you want your file to be. This is tremendously helpful, as you need the collage to be 54x36 inches. I set my resolution to 300 pixels per inch. That's a pretty high resolution and will work out great for this project.

On your right, you should see where you have your background layer listed. Currently, it should be your only layer. You'll want to make it a pretty color that compliments your recipe card, if you want the hemmed edges to have color to them. Do you see the two boxes of color just above the layers, one overlapping the other and slightly above and to the left? Double click on the one on the left, and move your cursor around on the color box until you like the color. Hit okay, and then on your toolbar (mine's on the far left of the screen), choose your paint bucket. Click on your plain white image, and it should fill with your selected color.

Now it's time to begin adding the recipe photos. Choose "File" and then "Place." Choose your first recipe. It will be too big when it first show up, so hit SHIFT and then drag the corner until it's the size you want it. You can also drag it around to one of the four quadrants of the image, so that you'll be able to fit four recipes on the same document. When you're satisfied, click the checkmark. By the way, if you don't hold down SHIFT while resizing, you will find that the recipe's dimensions will get distorted.

Place and resize your other three recipe photos the same way, and then you're almost done. I'd make the border just a little thicker than you think it should be. I made the mistake of making mine too narrow, and it was a real pain to hem. Just keep resizing (SHIFT and dragging the corners of the picture) until it looks right.

If you want to switch from one photo in the collage to a different photo within the collage, here's what you do so that you're able to grab that second photo: Click on the correct layer on the right side of your screen and then hit CTRL T. Every time you resize or move an item, make sure you click on the checkmark to finalize the movement.

Want to see some yummy family recipes? Yeah, I thought so. May I recommend Nan's Sugar Cookies, as the most awesomest cookies on the planet? She made them every easter, cut them into rabbits, iced them with white icing and then piped a pink trim. Ah, those were the good old days. Love and miss you, Nan!

You can do it!My next door neighbor has some nice pine trees that I thought would be a great backdrop for our Christmas photo shoot. The weather is in the upper 40s, so I decided to head outside and photograph the boys in their [completely thrifted] Christmas outfits.

I took some thrifted frames, spray painted them black, and added a big "H" to one and an "O" to the other. If you have three, four or five kids, you could spell the word "JOY," "NOEL" or "PEACE."

My husband then helped me with Adobe Photoshop CS5, to make the collage come together so cute :)
I love how it turned out! If I can do it, so can you!!
It's usually a size or two too big. Oh well- it's a good thing my kids always grow into them!
This dress shirt onesie is a prime example. I thought it would be cute for Easter. It's Halloween now, and it fits him. I was close, right?

Right before the photo shoot, he pulled off a button at the crotch, so he ended up having to wear pants with it. I thought it would be cute to see him running around in just a onesie, but oh well!Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-81228842987095400682012-10-11T17:52:00.001-04:002013-01-06T09:45:09.033-05:00A First Birthday Party, Seuss StyleI cannot believe my baby is 1. He's walking. (He's been walking for at least 2 months). He walks backward. He tries to run, (although it's really more like a speed walk). He has four teeth, and a fifth one that finally cut through just days before his birthday. He likes applesauce. He hates mommy's homemade peas. He enjoys clapping. If you point at him, even from clear across the room, he'll hurry over with his little index finger outstretched and come up and touch his finger to yours, like he's straight out of ET. We totally should have had an ET themed birthday party. That would have been hilarious :)

But instead, I opted for Dr. Seuss. Jonas likes the PBS show, "The Cat in the Hat Knows a lot About That." We read "Green Eggs and Ham" almost nightly. It's my oldest son's favorite book. I also figured that since we don't own all the Dr. Seuss books and/or movies, that would be a good gift idea to tell the relatives. No one knows what to get our boys because We. Have. Everything. They always ask, "What do the boys need?" Um, nothing. We have toy boxes, filled to the brim, in every room. We have totes of clothes that they boys are waiting to grow into. Seriously- I have totes of clothes that go up to size 6 (my oldest son currently wears a size 3). I have a thrifting problem, but that's for another day :)

I scoured the internet and amassed quite a Dr. Seuss party pinterest board. I found recipes that weren't necessarily Dr. Seuss, tweaked them, and made them for the party. We had The Grinch's Roast Beast, One Fish Tuna Fish, Green Eggs, Ham & Cheese Pinwheels, Fish in the Pot Goldfish Crackers, Thing 1 and Thing 2 Blue Tortilla Chips with Salsa, Pink Yink Drink (Tampico has a really good pink punch!), The Lorax Orange Sherbert, and Orange Jello Poke Cake.

Most of my photos didn't turn out very well because of the lighting, but I will share a few with you.
Hey, I'm a poet and didn't even know it :)

Today's project is the quotes on a canvas. Michaels has two packs of 16x20 canvases on sale for $5. Yowza. That's cheap.

I snatched up a pack, along with some raised scrapbooking alphabet stickers, and skipped merrily all the way home with my finds.

I already had some orange spray paint on hand, so I painted the entire canvas orange. When that was dry, I added my letters. As you can see, it screams Halloween, and that's not what I was going for.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 317px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OxPCWY76EEU/UABYBKS2V0I/AAAAAAAACq8/Y9aVMYuj7Tk/s400/IMG_0193%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5764704300000761666" />

Then I took off the words "brother" and "hug," painted the black letters with the orange spray paint, and painted the remaining two words with white spray paint. (I also found that the letters needed primed before painting).

After it was all dry, I reattached the white words to the canvas, and voila, it does not look like Halloween anymore :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-CfNJj_z7aNE/UABYA9zhwVI/AAAAAAAACqw/-1eAtWEpqMg/s400/IMG_0158%2B%25282%2529%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5764704296648163666" />

Linking to:
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VWU6z1OzK9E/UABYAjMgT2I/AAAAAAAACqk/DM68wN6STio/s400/IMG_0159%2B%25282%2529%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5764704289505169250" />

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-33298777008561504172012-07-12T13:21:00.014-04:002012-07-12T13:57:22.653-04:00Oversized Prints: $3 at Staples<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ImaxzLDYM-M/T_8NbmgSrzI/AAAAAAAACqU/rAWq4P6SKE4/s400/IMG_0158%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5764340815901142834" />

You've probably seen these:

Source: infarrantlycreative.net via Jodie on Pinterest

Source: sugarbeecrafts.com via Jodie on Pinterest

What?! You've never seen them? Well let me tell you, it's easy and cheap! Just visit the engineering prints page at staples.com to get started! The website says that engineering prints are not suitable for photographs, but if you have a good enough camera (ours is 10 megapixels), it works just fine!

Your size choices are 18x24, 24x36, and 36x48. Of course, the $2 poster frame I thrifted was none of those three sizes.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m52NZDR_jVE/T_8LRbUejHI/AAAAAAAACqI/jg6_anwRNDs/s400/IMG_0157%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5764338442076851314" />
(That thing rolled up on the frame is the print. They print out your photograph on very thin paper).

Most photograph editing programs have the capabilities to crop the photo to the right dimensions. After cropping the photo the way you want it, upload it to the staples website, select what size you want, and it will be ready to pick up at your local staples before you can say "Decorating on the Cheap is more fun than watching Magic Mike!"

When I made mine this morning, it cost me under $3 plus tax to make a 24x36 print. I'm not sure if that was a special sale or that's their every day price, but other bloggers have quoted slightly higher prices.

When I picked it up, for some reason it was still a little larger than my 22x28 frame. I just had a little extra trimming to do, and then it fit into the frame perfectly. I <3 how it turned out!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ImaxzLDYM-M/T_8NbmgSrzI/AAAAAAAACqU/rAWq4P6SKE4/s400/IMG_0158%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5764340815901142834" />

I can't wait until the basement is finished so I can get this up on the wall!!

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-33947257920615562372012-07-12T01:12:00.009-04:002012-07-12T02:03:18.817-04:00Gerber Training Underwear Refashion<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cVH0L40I4bU/T_2OhAiXeEI/AAAAAAAACpo/s4tj-z3wS4o/s400/IMG_0160%2B%25282%2529%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5763919795835074626" />

It's potty training time in our household!!! Can I get a Hallelujah! (And on a side note, anyone want to share how you washed poopy underwear?)

Anyway, awhile back, I had thrifted two pairs of new Gerber training underwear (they're they ones with the plastic outside, which by the way, do not stop pee from coming out and soaking the carpet). The tag says "tumble dry low." Just FYI, the dryer completely melted the plastic exterior in multiple places. *Sigh*

But never fear, I have a fabric stash a mile high which came to the rescue :)

I ripped off the old plastic coating, got out a thrifted jersey sheet (that's t-shirt material in case you don't know that term), and traced around the underwear leaving an inch or so all the way around for hemming and for a little extra give.

Cut two pieces out (one for the front, and one for the back). You can make the back piece a little larger if you want. With right sides together, I sewed the crotch and sides first.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 253px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2gpoQA4Lp-0/T-C5TXnN9gI/AAAAAAAACXc/kZw4Ewz5dhg/s400/underwear.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5755804066186655234" />

At this point, the Gerber interior and the new fabric exterior are still two separate pieces. Then I started attaching the two parts together by stretching out the elastic waistband as I sewed. I sewed the top of the exterior as close to the elastic waistband as possible.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 272px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-12vZtgytmzA/T-C5TfzG65I/AAAAAAAACXo/-fYMxamLbQQ/s400/underwear2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5755804068384009106" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 225px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2tzQdzcY3FM/T-C5TsEScPI/AAAAAAAACX0/YGTGPNm4yg0/s400/underwear3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5755804071677292786" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-XlkL9ayzwFE/T_5n0Vh2XjI/AAAAAAAACp4/fBOEom-Getw/s400/IMG_0159%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5764158721910791730" />

If you have a favorite underwear pattern or idea, I'd love to to hear about it!

Linking to Delightful Order's Thursday linky Party!

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-89926319622893676702012-07-11T08:37:00.011-04:002012-07-13T23:47:02.962-04:00My Little Man with a Yellow HatYou've all heard of Christmas in July, right? Well, it's Halloween in July :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Z19utaHCP14/T_11KY19fWI/AAAAAAAACpE/QSXsLa1is3A/s400/IMG_0168%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5763891919432023394" />

After reading over how other people have used yellow felt to create a yellow hat and realizing that I value my sanity too much to attempt it, I decided to go thrifting and find one to spray paint or dye instead. That didn't pan out so well.

But one trip to Michael's later, and voila! For $4, I scored a brown foam explorer hat! I already had yellow spray paint, black ribbon, and hot glue on hand.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-seJnNdpaEdQ/T_11JoVheeI/AAAAAAAACo8/V5i0HyLPRVU/s400/IMG_0162%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5763891906411067874" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a2q9JdsPs5E/T_11IkfI9JI/AAAAAAAACow/s4mzzYpf1cw/s400/IMG_0158%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5763891888197792914" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aPRo7zbR3DA/T_11IYwLkuI/AAAAAAAACok/HaQk3A4nwE8/s400/IMG_0167%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5763891885048042210" />

If you're wondering how I made the faux necktie or how I changed the outfit from white to yellow, just follow the links :)

Linking to:

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-39253915117385185652012-07-09T14:12:00.000-04:002012-07-09T14:13:08.309-04:00Sock Monkey Kids' Travel Pillow<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-q-5ccWVn6-M/T_ohCRj1NeI/AAAAAAAACoU/9a85B-XRmPg/s400/IMG_0162%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762954996131116514" />

Have you seen these seat belt pillows from Super Jenn? After seeing how comfy her kids looked, I knew I should totally make one for the car ride down to the Outer Banks for my three year old. And on a side note, with the HORRIBLE traffic we hit about just before we crossed over onto the islands, it took us 14 hours to get there. It was supposed to take us 11 hours. Sitting in three hour traffic for the last 15 miles was NOT FUN. Anyway...

This travel pillow was a completely free project! I almost forget about the miserable car ride when I think of the word free.

I already had the sock monkey fabric on hand. I had thrifted two sock monkey pillowcases awhile back and had a little fabric left after making a handmade swaddler for the baby.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-of-2M6LPmnw/TspmWY2JGiI/AAAAAAAACKA/b2DHeBp84g4/s400/IMG_0021%2B%255B%255D.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5677462815066626594" />

Aww... Isn't he cute? He's a month old in this photo.
Now he's nine months old!

I followed Super Jenn's awesome tutorial, but I think I would have made the fabric flaps that go around the seat belt a little larger. I never did put velcro on mine because I don't think my flaps are large enough to get around the seat belt. That's okay though, because I could see my three year old throwing a tantrum on the interstate when he didn't want the pillow on his lap anymore. The way I did it, the pillow just rested on him so he could use it or not. He was free to remove it from his lap <strike>and throw it on his baby brother when he was done with it</strike>. Not adding the velcro also addressed the safety concern that some people had... although really, I don't think the thin flap of fabric that would have been under the seat belt would cause a safety issue. That flap is thinner than a sweatshirt or jacket!

To fill the pillow, I used a combination of thrifted polyfil and t-shirt scraps. I'd say the pillow was a huge success, and in a year or so, I'm going to have to make another one so that boy #2 has one too!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-6eq7ZvByV8M/T_ohCB_DEhI/AAAAAAAACoI/CLnDggN8KaM/s400/IMG_0160%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762954991950303762" />Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-6850938793490015972012-07-08T06:55:00.019-04:002012-07-08T19:19:25.106-04:00Pirate Appliqued Jammies<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dQq2FqW7Uf4/T_mH-dxYjcI/AAAAAAAACn4/mhSxJFRWJiA/s400/IMG_0198%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786705410657730" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FZvVoR-EEio/T_mH9xYMr8I/AAAAAAAACns/tKrLtt_rWT4/s400/IMG_0201%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786693493862338" />

Did you know that Blackbeard was killed off of the Outer Banks in 1718? Argh!

We are home from the Outer Banks! And usually, as you head north to Ohio, the temperature doesn't increase. But holy smokes, as we crossed the bridge from West Virginia into Ohio, the little temperature thingie on the car said that it was 107 degrees.

*Beads of sweat rolling down our faces*

This heat is no fun. I can't imagine what our men and women are going through in Iraq and other hot places. I hear it's like 120 degrees there typically :(

Back to sewing. I found some really cute pirate jammie pants down in the OBX. At $11.99, they were a bit of a splurge, but I bought them anyway because I'm a sucker for anything with pirates on them. They had really cute pirate jammie tops too, but none in his size. And even if there were some in his size, I wasn't about to spend another $11.99 for the top. The way it is, I could have bought 12-24 pairs of thrifted PJs for that (and nice ones too, not the ratty I-would-never-dress-my-kid-in-this kind!).

I also saw a really cute appliqued lady's pirate tee down there, and I'm kind of kicking myself for not getting it. I found it online in kid sizes and pinned it:

Source: grays-sportswear.com via Jodie on Pinterest

I figured I could free-hand a pretty good pirate head from looking at this picture, and make an appliqued pirate PJ top to match the PJ bottoms I bought on vacation.

As I had already invested $12 in this outfit, I wasn't about to put another single penny into it. Using things I already had on hand, I created a pirate PJ shirt for my son :) The shirt itself was from my sister-in-law's heading-to-goodwill pile. I sewed down a plain black shirt of hers to fit a four year old. And then using red, white, and black t-shirt scraps and some fusible web from my stash, I made the pirate.

I looooooooove how it turned out!!! He, on the other hand, was not thrilled about it until I pointed out that the pants have little guns on them like HIS gun! His gun is a replica George Washington pistol :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sOPmTzN6h4M/T_mHzg38aPI/AAAAAAAACmw/F2k-OP0QZ3Q/s400/IMG_0177%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786517264918770" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--GJq5YzkapQ/T_mH9TBfjlI/AAAAAAAACng/PCqTbDbUb9A/s400/IMG_0181%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786685345566290" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_zo8yoQR6ZQ/T_mH83Fl2tI/AAAAAAAACnU/bAp5q0BQSJE/s400/IMG_0194%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786677846563538" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Ug-HYoNyfPk/T_mH0XHGRDI/AAAAAAAACnI/8jNsg38V3Qo/s400/IMG_0190%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786531823993906" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Bo876l_ZdnU/T_mH0HoeMoI/AAAAAAAACm8/-nAktfXm8Jc/s400/IMG_0187%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786527669006978" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EBKNyFPKYp8/T_mHzU-27QI/AAAAAAAACmk/3qpZu7OMyeM/s400/IMG_0172%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786514072694018" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WJqpNcoheE4/T_mHy981CgI/AAAAAAAACmY/x5Y0wP9q_eY/s400/IMG_0179%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5762786507890166274" />

Linking up to:

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-66031071684077374872012-07-04T20:01:00.004-04:002012-07-04T22:15:18.783-04:00Old Navy Flag Tee Upcycle$5 flag tees from Old Navy! My hubby ran to Meijer for milk late last night after the kids went to bed, and I told him to pick up a box of yellow RIT dye too. (In case you missed the post yesterday, I made a white "Man in the Yellow Hat" Halloween costume for my son, and I'm dying it yellow).

Last night I upcycled my sister-in-law's white linen skirt into white pants for Joel. The waist band is <strike>a little </strike> a lot girly, so I'm going to have to put some testosterone into it, but other than that, I'm lovin' the outfit!

This morning, the <strike> screaming</strike> darling baby and I came downstairs. Armed with a bottle of formula and a cup of coffee, we got to work dying the costume yellow!

I did it in a stock pot with just over a gallon of hot water and the entire box of dye. I did put it on the stove on low, but I was afraid of melting the plastic lid so I didn't turn it up high at all. The water never boiled and really wasn't all that hot. I only left it in the dye solution for 10 minutes, then I started rinsing. (And in case you're wondering like I was, RIT dye water CAN be saved for use at a later date! I wanted to keep the yellow water in case Joel outgrows the dress shirt. It's a 3T, but with my luck, he'll need a 4 by then. If he does, I'll just thrift another cotton dress shirt, and dye it too :) I have the water saved in an old milk jug with "DO NOT DRINK!" written all over it.

Back to the how-to... I put all three articles of clothes (the 100% cotton dress shirt, the linen pants, and the t-shirt material mock necktie) in the dryer on EXTRA low. Once again, I was worried about melting the plastic piece in the mock necktie, but it was just fine.

And now, drumroll please, I introduce to you Joel's Halloween costume this year.... My son loooooooooves Curious George, but the main reason I made the decision is that I found a 18 month monkey costume on clearance for $5 after Halloween :)

(And by the way, I do realize it's not even Independence Day yet!) Anyway...

I plan on taking one of his dress shirts, a pair of white pants, and a tie, and dying them all yellow with RIT dye. That way, all the yellows match. Aren't I smart? :)

I'm going to make him a pair of pants out of a white linen skirt that my sister-in-law didn't fit anymore. For the tie, I thrifted a white t-shirt with large black polka dots for $1. When I saw the fabric, I knew it was just right!!!

Since this fabric is t-shirt material, I thought I'd just make a mock tie. (You know, a tie that's not really a tie at all). T-shirt material is just way too wonky for the real deal. I must warn you: there's hot glue involved. It just needs to last one day. This is the quick and dirty way to get the tie look without all the time it takes to make one the right way.

I took a few pictures as I went, but they're not the best. So sorry. It's hotter than @*#%^&$#, and I just didn't feel like going outside to get better lighting.

I drew and cut out a tie on a piece of newspaper for a pattern, held it up to my son, figured the size was just about perfect, and got to cutting the fabric. With right sides together, I cut two ties out and sewed them together. I sewed all the way around except for the top - I used the top hole to turn it right side out. Iron flat if you're perfectionist. If not, that's cool too. I sure didn't. You can topstitch the opening closed once the tie is right side out. I didn't, but it would look a little nicer from the back if you do. It won't really matter because the back is not going to show, so either way is fine.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gdgUsgAlXaQ/T-utOpXB6NI/AAAAAAAACfE/YtsANumN3o8/s400/IMG_0158%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758887015655532754" />

Now it's time to start the faux knot. You will need a hot glue gun, some polyfill, a little more matching fabric, and something thin and plastic that you can cut... like a butter lid or something like that. I used a lid from a plastic Gerber baby food container.

Freehand a knot onto your plastic lid and cut it out. Hold it up to your tie to make sure it's the right size. Take your fabric scrap, wrap it around your knot, and begin hot gluing it down on the back. Hot glue down all the sides except for the top of the knot.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--kKex_5adJ0/T-vbYcgdsWI/AAAAAAAACfw/ZS0bmlHZEzo/s400/IMG_0159%2B%2528Medium%2529%2B%25282%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758937761539010914" />

Before you glue down the last side of the knot, stuff in a little poly fill until you're satisfied with the look of the knot. Then go ahead and glue the last side down. Make sure you remove all the hot glue stringy things. You can see I forgot to do that before I photographed it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-IxP8HaDHkeE/T-vbYIzXjYI/AAAAAAAACfk/k4VcT9p4J6k/s400/IMG_0161%2B%2528Medium%2529%2B%25282%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758937756249591170" />

Then I hot glued the knot to the top of the tie, added some stick-on velcro to both the back of the tie and the shirt, and voila, you're done!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-q1uk9hzHhYU/T-utI--fSjI/AAAAAAAACeg/uqdW4Qrn2XU/s400/IMG_0164%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758886918378965554" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-lAZvNEebfWo/T-utIp_8fyI/AAAAAAAACeU/EG644FeUm2I/s400/IMG_0165%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758886912747929378" />

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-20725495206002973352012-06-25T18:08:00.004-04:002012-06-25T22:26:51.225-04:00Operation Finished Basement: Two Toned End Tables
We've been in our new house for almost two years now.
(When does a new house stop being a new house?)

We've been slowly but surely crossing things off our to-do list. When we first moved in, we remodeled the laundry room, painted 90% of the house, recarpeted the living room, and changed out many of the lighting fixtures. Eventually we swapped out the ugly builder grade bathroom mirrors for ones with frames and painted the kitchen. Last summer we put in a patio.

This summer it's the basement!!! (Paid in full by Uncle Sam's Tax Refund Check!)
Thank goodness for <strike>large tax deductions for having</strike> our children.

We have an awesome next door neighbor who is a contractor. We hired him to do the job. While he's been toiling away in the basement, I've been getting all the decor ready. As soon as he's finished, I'm going to swoop in and get my Nake Berkus on.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OR1GlrNsJpo/T-dIcGZxa9I/AAAAAAAACdQ/v1WPnxCUrZY/s400/IMG_0168%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757650296208714706" />

Here are my two-toned end tables that I finished this week (and in case you missed it, here's the two toned furniture I did last summer). They used to be a drab wood color, but I can't complain because they were free from my ex-boyfriend's mom. At my old house, our basement had a water problem, and the bottoms of these legs got damaged. I had to use Kilz primer to block out the stain, and then I painted most of the dresser white.

I like the two tone look though, so I decided to stain the table tops in a dark cherry. I <3 how they turned out!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xpiWnqEN2Q4/T-dIcQDaF5I/AAAAAAAACdo/37HGURFPCP0/s400/IMG_0171%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757650298799265682" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_5CWT1-8Zi4/T-dIcLVZy4I/AAAAAAAACdc/yvSSLElCfDk/s400/IMG_0169%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757650297532566402" />

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-9609443498050923722012-06-24T11:41:00.011-04:002012-06-25T22:23:40.139-04:00Button Placket Pant Legs<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D_YlsFLsJfI/T-aIA8Sm3hI/AAAAAAAACb4/JEPekGqaU6E/s400/IMG_0170%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757438723405307410" />

My sister-in-law and her family are moving to Cincinnati this summer, and so she's doing a lot of weeding out of stuff they don't wear or use anymore.

Enter me. The <strike> annoying scavenger</strike> relative who always wants other people's trash!

I was lucky enough to intercept the box of clothes before it went to the thrift store. Now I can make some upcycled clothes for the kiddoes :) I did tell her that I would make her daughter a few shirts and skirts. I thrifted a 30c girls clothes pattern (still new in the package, never cut) just for the occasion.

I was excited to find a plaid shirt to cut up because little boy plaid shorts are all the rage, you know.

Because I wanted the pocket to be on the butt, I aligned the pattern to make sure the pocket was in the right spot. Doing so put the button placket (although technically they're snaps) from the shirt on the side of the pant leg. I wasn't sure how I felt about that until I was out shopping and saw some shorts with the snap buttons up the side. Now I'm digging it. I even got compliments on the placement of the button placket from my neighbors :)

Now go raid the closet and make some button placket shorts!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HjxUjgVhdow/T-aIN0zSdNI/AAAAAAAACdA/5ydMq_DmD5w/s400/IMG_0195%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757438944733197522" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A27Sci729cY/T-aINrKug9I/AAAAAAAACc0/z3X9WNkyjuE/s400/IMG_0186%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757438942147150802" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5aLdy4bTRck/T-aIB1CNRqI/AAAAAAAACco/PXVFpfiEB4w/s400/IMG_0188%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757438738637342370" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ScFD1h52hd0/T-aIBaGOooI/AAAAAAAACcc/cX2QH3r3qnU/s400/IMG_0184%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757438731406451330" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_SrdQtNbTos/T-aIBCIlUaI/AAAAAAAACcQ/D6y94jIkPRY/s400/IMG_0191%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757438724973875618" />

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-d14cDHY5dzw/T-aIA5xaXiI/AAAAAAAACcE/-VNI4BInEoE/s400/IMG_0193%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757438722729205282" />

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-57879422207714548232012-06-23T11:48:00.012-04:002012-06-26T12:50:53.288-04:00Nightstand turned Kiddy Play Sink<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RZ81q0qHDI0/T-XkLiZdQQI/AAAAAAAACbQ/FNU0UL3YRSc/s400/IMG_0167%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757258585526321410" />

At a garage sale years ago, I bought two nightstands for $5. I put four operational drawers in the one nightstand, modpodged it with sheet music, and took it to work for my office (I'm a music teacher).

And then junior high kid wrote the F-word on it. *Sigh*

The other nightstand just sat around in my basement for awhile until I got the ingenious idea to turn it into a play sink for my son.

At a garage sale, I scored a metal bread pan and a chrome soap dispenser. The bread pan is the sink. I envisioned the soap dispenser becoming a fully functional spigot. The water goes in the bottom part that would normally hold soap. There used to be a chrome outer sleeve to cover up the ugly white part, but I tossed that since I didn't need it. After I got rid of it, I had the idea that I could have used it as a pencil holder or something. Oh well!

I got out my trusty little jig saw and cut out the openings for the bread pan and the soap dispenser. And then it sat. For two years.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CZhuJo41JyA/T-XkkdTJKzI/AAAAAAAACbc/A6yZzggHg74/s400/IMG_0162%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757259013654391602" />

At the moment, we're getting our basement refinished (yay!), and when we were cleaning out the basement, I found the half-finished kiddy sink from way back when.

My. Son. Loved. It. It's a car wash! It's a rock wash! And so much more!

He had so much fun playing with it that now I have to finish it. I decided to just make shelves instead of trying to fix the two broken drawers, so I used luan plywood that I had lying around in the garage (free from a construction site a few years ago-- just make sure to ask first!) Don't look too close at the luan shelves- I'm not the best jig-sawer.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1zHKhoheRbA/T-Xkkg_BkDI/AAAAAAAACbo/uFv-ASyTEhg/s400/IMG_0161%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757259014643748914" />

I envisioned a sink apron to cover up the ugly make-shift shelving. I used a cup hook on each side connected with a dowel rod (all of which I already had on hand) to create a curtain rod, and a piece of $1 kitchen-y printed fabric (that I thrifted eons ago) to make the sink apron.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VTl4862c_Xo/T-kYbsqgyqI/AAAAAAAACd4/DBCa8j5-3Y0/s400/IMG_0167%2B-%2BCopy.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5758160462694894242" />

Nightstand + Bread Pan + Soap Dispenser + Luan + Cup Hooks + Dowel Rod + Fabric + Paint = One Happy Boy :)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-7j0TUCAZFCo/T-XkLQnm4SI/AAAAAAAACbE/k_tukitKPhc/s400/IMG_0158%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757258580753834274" />

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-22524604205075653872012-06-22T18:28:00.010-04:002012-06-25T23:11:49.298-04:001895 Pineapple Custard and an Old Fashioned Codfish PieWhen I'm not sewing, painting furniture, or staring at Pinterest, you'll find me doing genealogy or other history-oriented things. One of the things I love to do is find historic recipes in old newspapers and make them. I'll leave you with a few (some look good, others not so much).

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-29vyT--SZ3c/T-UHbVjqUGI/AAAAAAAACaA/O1klJ9DDeOo/s400/IMG_0259%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5757015864887627874" />

On tonight's menu is Pineapple Custard from 1895.
And french toast with the leftover egg/milk/nutmeg mixture ... it seems that 6 eggs and a pint of milk were too much. I even put in two cans of Dole pineapple, one crushed and one chunked. I served it with Cool Whip. I love me some Cool Whip. Unfortunately, this got mixed reviews at our house. My son loved his first bite. I have a feeling it was a bite of 100% Cool Whip. He spit out his second bite. *Sigh* I think it's alright, but I probably won't be making it again. It's pretty eggy. Or perhaps I would halve the amount of milk and eggs in the recipe and add yet another can of pineapple.

Pineapple Custard, 1895
"Fill a deep dish with a can of 'Home Guard' pineapple, cut into small pieces; add five large tablespoonfuls of powdered sugar. Beat six eggs very light, mix them with a pint of milk and four more spoonfuls of sugar, adding some grated nutmeg. Pour this over the pineapple, set the dish into a moderate oven and bake half an hour. Serve when cold. This will make a delicious custard."

Steamed Corn Bread, 1893
"Did you ever try steaming corn bread in place of baking it? If not, do so. Use my favorite recipe. This one has proved very satisfactory: Two cupfuls of cornmeal, a cupful of lour, 1 1/2 cupfuls of buttermilk, half a cupful of molasses, butter the size of an egg, a teaspoonful each of salt and soda. Steam 1 1/2 hours, bake 10 minutes."

Corn Beef Hash, 1902
"Equal parts of boiled prime corn beef and potatoes are prepared. The beef is chopped as fine as possible, the soft, mealy potatoes are cut into tiny cubes. A small onion is minced to add flavor to the mass, and the dishes are rubbed with a head of garlic. Another garlic head is wrapped in a piece of the fat and thrown into the center of the mass. The whole is then mixed thoroughly and nicely browned in a big skillet or frying pan. During this operation disks of Bermuda onions, cut so that each round shows every ring of the onion, are thrown into a deep dish of pure lard and browned separately. When these disks are crisp, they are used to garnish the edge of the platter, and the hash is served garnished with parsley or herbs and the usual condiment is a squeeze of a lemon."

Blackberry Shortcake, 1902
"Sift together three cups of pastry flour, a tablespoonful of salt and six level teaspoonfuls of baking powder. With the tips of the fingers, well floured, work in a third of a cup of butter, wet with about a cup and a half of milk and water and mix to a soft dough; spread in two buttered pans, smoothing the dough with a knife of spoon. When baked, butter the under crust and put together with two baskets of blackberries that have been standing with sugar sprinkled over them."

A Fruit Sandwich, 1902
"If other sandwich-fillings fail, try one of dried or candied fruits. A recipe to fill fifteen sandwiches calls for a quarter of a pound of candied cherries, a quarter of a pound of seeded raisins, and a quarter pound of dates chopped very fine. Mix, add a quarter of a pound of grated cocoanut, and moisten with the juice of half an orange and a quarter of a cupful of grape juice. Cut thin slices of white sandwich bread info fancy shapes, butter and spread the filling between." {I want to try this one!! Seems kid friendly and a good way to get in more fruit without all the added sugar in jams and jellies}

A Fruit Cake Recipe, 1893
"If fruit cake you essay? to make,
One pound of sugar you must take
Three pounds of raisins, flour one pound,
Two pounds of currants, cloves, well ground,
Three quarters pound of butter, one
Gill of molasses. This being done
One and one quarter pounds you'll take
Of citron and eight eggs you'll break
One nutmeg and one half, and one
Half gill of brandy add this done,
And all well mixed, with care you'll bake,
Twill make eight pounds of fine fruit cake."

An Old Fashioned Codfish Pie, 1890
"The codfish pie of our grandmothers makes a famous dish for frugal Friday and Lent. Here is an old recipe for it by a Connecticut lady. Line a deep baking dish with a good pie crust, or with a good soda biscuit crust made in the following manner. Sift together four cups of flour, one heaping teaspoonful of soda and two of cream tartar (or three heaping teaspoonfuls of baking powder), and one teaspoonful of salt. Rub in one half cupful of shortening. Add milk enough to make a medium soft dough- about a pint. Some flour takes more than others. For the upper crust spread butter on twice and fold and roll out. Cut out a round piece in the center.
Take a pint of picked up salt codfish, cover with boiling water, let it stand two minutes, drain, pour on more water, let stand and drain dry, put a layer of this codfish in the dish which has been lined with the crust, sprinkle with bread crumbes, pepper and a little salt if the fish is very fresh, put on bits of butter and some cream sauce which has been made by thickening one point of boiling milk with two tablespoonfuls of flour, and seasoning with salt and pepper, break in three or four eggs according to the size of the dish, piercing the yolks, repeat the codfish, bread crumbs, cream sauce and eggs, put on the top crust, and bake a delicate brown."

Um, not so sure about that last one...

Sewing-Chickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13282532221695943114noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1743949257926922390.post-33992260569802082352012-06-20T21:34:00.010-04:002012-06-24T12:17:09.251-04:00I got to sew girl clothes for once!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 267px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-78Mc53ZeiDg/T-PZB0F-YfI/AAAAAAAACZg/Wb6IjuyvjOY/s400/IMG_0164%2B-%2BCopy%2B%2528Medium%2529.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5756683373896425970" />

My neighbor wanted to dress her little girl in some bandana dresses, so I got to sew some dresses for a change!

Let me tell you.
